LAYOUT DRAWING: TUTORIAL

Step 14: MORE ABOUT "CHECK AND BUILD"

The purpose of the "Check and Build module" operation, which we have already used earlier in this tutorial,
is to make sure that all track segments are correctly connected, and that no segment overlap occur.
Since CDM-Rail allows for handling track elevations, the "check and build" operation checks that, if two
tracks intersect, there is a minimum height clearance between these two tracks.

The minimum height clearance is 7 cm for HO scale. It is derived from this value for other scales, by applying
the scale ratio.

Elevation and layer handling is not discussed in the scope of this tutorial:
see "Users Notes" for more details on these operations.

The check and build operation must have been carried out successfully (with no errors), before going to the
next phases
, namely route creation and simulation.

In order to have a closer look at the "check and build operation", we are going to introduce a spurious
track segment, crossing the two upper tracks.

For this purpose, click on icon "Add straight segment" (leftmost yellow icon), and draw a segment as in
figure below, intersecting the upper track, and the parallel siding.

Then invoke the "check and build" operation as already seen: click on the first green icon (starting from left).

... OR invoke it directly from the main menu bar

"Edit/Module" >> "Check and build module"

The result window pops up, and indicates that errors have been found.

A a matter of fact, we now have 4 error symbols (see figure below):

  • Two red circles flag the unconnected segment ends

  • Two red diamond flag the elevation clerance errors

Figure 14-1: 4 errors flagged

It is possible to get some more detail on these errors, by clicking on error symbols.

If we click on a diamond symbol, a window pos-up and give some details about the segments at hand,
and their respective elevations (Z coordinate).

THIS IS THE END OF THIS TUTORIAL.

The layout generated in this tutorial will be the basis for the simulation tutorial.
The intermediate and final steps of this layout may be retrieved in subdirectory "Layout/TUTORIAL", below
CDM-Rail installation root.

For more sophisticated drawing features see "User Notes".
